Solicitation Permit/Do Not Solicit List

Overview

Residents who wish to opt out of door-to-door solicitations can request to be added to the Borough’s official Do Not Solicit list by contacting Detective Lieutenant at 201-599-6320 or via email at Police@RiverEdgePolice.org. This list is maintained by the River Edge Police Department, provided to all licensed solicitors operating within River Edge, and enforced by the River Edge Police Department. Once registered, your residence will be included in the directory that prohibits solicitors from approaching your door at any time.

Chapter 314 Peddling and Soliciting

§ 314-6 Issuance of permit and identification badge.

The Chief of Police or his designee, shall issue a permit and identification badge upon completion of the solicitation permit application form. The permit and badge shall be issued to any and all applicants who complete the application form and provide photo identification. A separate permit and badge shall be issued to each individual who engages in solicitation within the Borough. The permit shall be signed by the Chief of Police or his designee. The permit shall state the name of the individual, the business or organization for which solicitation is made, and the date the permit was issued.

314-7 Carrying and displaying permit and badge.

Each individual engaging in solicitation within the Borough shall carry the permit issued to him upon his person and display his badge at all times while soliciting within the Borough, and shall produce the permit and badge if requested to do so by the police or any resident. Failure to carry the permit and/or display the badge during solicitation shall constitute a violation of this article.

314-8 Time limits on solicitation.

A. A solicitation permit shall be effective for 30 days after the date it is issued. Solicitation without a valid permit in effect shall constitute a violation of this article. B. Solicitation shall take place within the Borough only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Solicitors are encouraged to wear reflective clothing and/or to carry flashlights if soliciting after dark.[Amended 6-21-2010 by Ord. Solicitor Permits

Solicitors are required to obtain a permit from the River Edge Police Department before going door to door. Each solicitor will be issued a solicitor badge that is required to be worn at all times while soliciting in River Edge. The solicitors badges are shown above for reference.   

Violations

The River Edge Police Department encourages residents to call the Police Department to report solicitors operating without a solicitor’s badge. If you have concerns or want to report suspicious persons/activity in your neighborhood, call the River Edge Police Department’s non-emergency line at 201-262-1233.  If you have other questions about solicitor permits, please get in touch with the Police Department. 

Registration for the “Do Not Solicit” list shall be made as follows:

(1) The “Do Not Solicit” list shall be maintained by the Police Department.

(2)  It shall consist solely of property addresses and shall include no further identifying information concerning the ownership of each property.

(3)  The Tax Assessor shall notify the Police Department of any change in ownership of property within the Borough. The Police Department shall remove from the “Do Not Solicit” list any property which has changed ownership.
