It\u2019s Probably a Scam<\/strong><\/p><p>Whether you\u2019ve driven through a toll recently or not, you might\u2019ve gotten a text saying you owe money for unpaid tolls. It\u2019s probably a scam. Scammers are pretending to be tolling agencies from coast to coast and sending texts demanding money. Learn how the scam works so you can avoid it.<\/p><p>You get a text out of the blue that says you have unpaid tolls and need to pay immediately. The scammy text might show a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe and include a link that takes you to a page to enter your bank or credit card info \u2014 but it\u2019s a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams\">phishing scam<\/a><\/span>. Not only is the scammer trying to steal your money, but if you click the link, they could get your personal info (like\u00a0your driver\u2019s license number) \u2014 and even steal your\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/what-know-about-identity-theft\">identity<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p>To avoid a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages\">text scam<\/a><\/span>\u00a0like this:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Don\u2019t click on any links\u00a0<\/strong>in,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>or respond to, unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly, but it\u2019s best to stop and check it out.<\/li><li><strong>Check to see if the text is legit.<\/strong>\u00a0Reach out to the state\u2019s tolling agency using a phone number or website you know is real \u2014 not the info from the text.<\/li><li><strong>Report and delete unwanted text messages.<\/strong>\u00a0Use your phone\u2019s \u201creport junk\u201d option to report unwanted texts<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages#report\">to your messaging app<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or forward them to\u00a07726 (SPAM).
